3 Approaches to Delegation

When preparing to delegate a task, remember the eggs. Don't expect someone to magically replicate the exact thing you have in your head (micro-management), or give vague instructions and hope for the best (laissez-faire) - instead, give clear instructions, offer space to ask clarifying questions, and show you trust them. This gives your colleagues ownership of the task, and helps them deliver what you need with a little personal flair.

takeaways
Make your requests SMART

Be sure to prepare the tasks you want to delegate before arriving at the conversation, using SMART to ensure you're giving your colleague the best chance of understanding what's required. Remember to invite them to ask clarifying questions, and agree together what check-ins you need BEFORE the deadline to ensure everything is on track.

Give powerful feedback

Again, it always helps to prepare to give feedback - use these tools to help you. Praising and thanking colleagues in public is great, but feedback is different. It is designed to help people start, stop and continue behaviours to become more effective. People may be nervous about receiving feedback, so be sure to put them at ease, and do this in private, not in front of other team members.

Difficult conversations for managers

Given that these are incredibly common difficult conversations that people responsibile for teams will have, it's worth considering how you would approach them. Why not speak to a couple of managers you respect - in your organisation or whom you know from elsewhere - and ask them about their approaches and principles that guide them in these hard scenarios.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
takeaways
Prepare yourself

Acknowledge your fears and feelings. Pushing them away is like running away from a hyperactive dog, they will just chase you thinking it's a game. Take time on your own to map out the following responses, so you can tap into your own judgement and intuition. You might want to check and validate this with a senior colleague.
